Date Night

Glass of wine

Mmmmm.... wine

Apologies for the late post – been feeling a little bit “fragile” today after our date last night. Woo hoo – first proper night out as a couple in about 6 months and it rocked.

We will need to sell some body organs to pay for it though, so it’s probably lucky that we don’t go out that often.

Dinner and drinks at Kermadec – thoroughly recommend it. I had tuna (divine) followed by the cheese board (yu-um) and the Sticky Man had John Dory, and a delicious looking chocolate tart. The setting is beautiful, overlooking the viaduct and the weather and views were fabulous. On the wine list was a Pinot Gris from Otago called Peregrine, so obviously I had to have a bottle glass*.

We then had drinks at Sky City before watching Avatar 3D – very pleased we managed to see it on the big screen and even more pleased I managed to stay awake throughout the entire film, despite it finishing at mid-night (I have been known to fall asleep during the opening credits of some films and my usual bedtime these days is about 10pm).

A quick $30 parking fee (infuriating city centre parking) and we were on our way home. Pepi was thankfully a super star baby for our friends who babysat, phew!

It’s Auckland Anniversary weekend so Monday is a public holiday which fortunately gives us another day to recover. There are lots of events taking place around the city and the weather really is at its best at the moment. For anyone thinking about visiting NZ, now is a great time of year to come over. Leave it til next week when the kids go back to school and it will be even better, the beaches will be quiet and prices drop to off-peak.

Go on, book those flights.

*Yes, I know this isn’t really part of my “body revolution” programme, but we don’t get out much and I couldn’t help myself… will burn it off tomorrow, honest!

Hurray for dates! I envy your weather, it’s about 2 degrees here today, although the sun is shining :)

Brrrr – that does sound a wee bit chilly. But I bet it’s lovely and cosy indoors with the sun streaming in and your radiators on… ahhhh radiators. Is is wrong to really miss those metal wall-mounted appliances? I do though, come winter here in Auckland, I would do anything to have radiators in our house!

Pleased to have found your blog, was looking to read about someones ups and downs of moving to NZ. I lived there in the late early 00′s and would love to move back but having trouble persuading my other half… mention of Kermadec made me smile, it had just opened when I was there, the year NZ won the America’s cup I think – or thereabouts – lovely food then too ;-)

Hi Mayon – thanks for stopping by. What made you leave NZ? And are you back in the UK now? I have heard of people who have lived here, returned to the UK and then come back to NZ again, must be hard if you’re other half isn’t as keen as you.
Yes – Kermadec is one of the nicest restaurants I’ve been to in a while (but I don’t get out much, so that is not saying much!). Cheers

I was a student in Auckland! I came back to London after I finished my degree and to be fair, at 24 I needed the bright lights and nights out of London but now, in my 30′s and a mum it’s a different story. I totally understand that it’s not all perfect – I remember the cold villas in winter and the lack of good shopping but the thought of the kids being able to run around on the beach and the lovely outdoors is such a driving force! Enjoy!

Thanks – yes, I think even if we tire of living here, it will be hard to move away from the lifestyle that our daughter has here. Went to the beach yesterday and it was brilliant.
Are you still in London? Which part? I have many friends with kids who lived in London and have now moved out to the ‘burbs and they have a very nice life, just not the sort we want at the moment.
So – are you a Kiwi? If so, hopefully you get the chance to come over and visit the family every once in a while?
